The County’s former Redevelopment Agency acquired four parcels totaling 3.7 acres near the corner of 17th Avenue Capitola Road for possible use as a neighborhood-serving development. When Redevelopment Agencies were eliminated in 2011, the properties were placed on a list to be sold off to the highest bidder and developed in accordance with commercial zoning on the site.
Before that occurs, the County of Santa Cruz would like to create a neighborhood-based plan for the site, taking advantage of a once-in-a-generation opportunity to give Live Oak a community gathering point, provide neighborhood benefits and establish a foundation for the future. This is your chance to guide what happens at 17th and Capitola and create the community you want.
Based on initial responses to the RFQ, the County of Santa Cruz has identified MidPen Housing as the preferred lead developer of the mixed-use 17th and Capitola site. On Dec. 5, 2017, the Board of Supervisors adopted an exclusive negotiating agreement with MidPen Housing to develop a mixed-use housing and community services project.
