WASTE DISPOSAL GUIDELINES
FOR SANTA CRUZ COUNTY
RESIDENTS DIRECTLY AFFECTED BY THE SUMMIT FIRE
The County of Santa
Cruz is working to assist residents in disposing
of debris from the recent Summit Fire.
Please follow the guidelines below in disposing of your waste. If you have questions, please call the number
at the bottom or refer to our website.
- Residents
directly affected by the fire may dispose of fire-related debris only at
no charge. To determine if you
qualify for this service, please call the gate house number below.
- This
free service for qualified Summit Fire victims will be available until June 30, 2008.
- Uncontaminated
and unburned hazardous materials must not be commingled with ash and
debris. Hazardous materials must be
handled separately and delivered to the landfill’s Household
Hazardous Waste facility, open every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Saturday, 7:30 am
to 3:30 pm. This includes
propane tanks (10 gallons or less), gasoline cans, containers for chemicals, fertilizers
and cleaning materials, batteries, paints, pesticides and other hazardous
materials. Please call for more
information before taking such materials to the facility as some large or
especially hazardous items may require special handling.
- All non-hazardous
fire-related debris from qualified residents may be disposed of at the
Buena Vista Landfill, 1231 Buena
Vista Drive, Watsonville, open every
day from 7:30am until 3:30pm.
- County
recycling ordinances are still in effect.
Every reasonable effort should be made to separate recyclable
materials, including unburned wood, yard waste, paper, plastic, glass,
metal, rock, earth and concrete.
Call the number or refer to the website listed below for more
information.
- Large
metal objects such as engine blocks, automobiles, trucks and trailers are not
accepted at the landfill.
- Ash
and ash contaminated soil will be accepted on a temporary limited basis.
- All loads,
particularly those with ash or loose materials, must be wetted down and securely
tarped and covered to prevent spillage or airborne drift during transport.
- Residents must bring ID with an
address. Commercial haulers must
bring an invoice or manifest clearly identifying the source of the debris
