The Santa Cruz County Emergency Operations Center concluded operations on Wednesday, September 12, 2001 at 5:00 pm after two days of monitoring the State and Federal response to terrorist attacks of September 11th. The Center will be reactivated in the event that future emergency operations become necessary. The following information is provided for County residents who may be in need of ongoing information and services.

A Day of Prayer and Remembrance

President Bush has declared Friday, September 14, 2001 to be a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance. Local and state government and public agency offices will remain open, operating on a business-as-usual basis.

Blood Drive

For those interested in donating blood, call to make an appointment with the American Red Cross, 1-800-448-3543, or visit their website at  www.BeADonor.com.  For Santa Cruz residents interesting in donating blood at this time, the nearest Red Cross donation center is in San Jose. Ongoing donations of blood will be crucial to the recovery effort in the weeks ahead. Local upcoming blood donation collections include:

September 27th, 12:30-5:30pm at the First Presbyterian Church in Santa Cruz
October 22nd, 1:30-6:30pm at Community Hospital in Watsonville. 

Additionally, the County’s Health Services Agency and Administrative Office are working with the American Red Cross to coordinate additional local collection efforts. Call the Red Cross or consult their website for information.

Mental Health Assistance

The County’s Health Services Agency and the Santa Cruz County Chapter of the American Red Cross continue in their collaborative efforts to assess local needs and facilitate an appropriate response to local schools and residents.
